A Thousand Cranes Grades 2-5 Friday, March 18, 2011 * 11:00 a.m. * 1 hour
A Thousand Cranes presents the true and poignant story of Sadako Saski, who was 2 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on the small city of Hiroshima, Japan, where she lived. Sadako is the fastest girl in her class and is looking forward to an upcoming city-wide race, until she meets an unexpected challenge. At age 12, she becomes ill with leukemia, an effect of the bombing 10 years before.
A friend reminds her of the legend that if she folds 1,000 origami cranes the gods would make her well again. Sadako happily begins folding hundreds of beautiful, colorful, paper cranes and calls to the spirit of her grandmother. Sadako died on October 25, 1955, before finishing the cranes. Her friends folded the rest to make 1000 and planned a monument in her honor. Her wish is engraved on the base of the statue: “This is our cry, this is our prayer, peace in the world.”
