Summer Camps 2008 – Descriptions

Mixed-Up Masterpieces Visual Arts Camps
In each one-week session students will experience working in mediums such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, found objects, and more.  Projects will not repeat and one or more new projects will be introduced each day. Classes will be taught by professional artists.
 
Ages 5-6   1:00-3:30 p.m.
Ages 7-12 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Take the Stage! Performing Arts Camps
Each one-week session will expose children to a variety of performing arts methods such as dance, theater, and music.  Classes will be taught by the Arts Center’s professional production crew, cast members from the Arts Center’s summer production of Buddy, and other professionals in the performing arts.  Topics will include costume design, dance, music, drama, and more!

Ages 5-6   10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Ages 7-12  1:00-3:30 p.m.

         Visual & Performing Arts Camps - Session Dates:
         Week 1:  June 16-20 (Mixed Up Masterpieces ONLY)
         Week 2:  June 23-27
         Week 3:  July 21-25

         Tuition: $100/week each or $175 for both Mixed Up Masterpieces and Take the Stage

Theater Camp
Make a cast of new friends during this fun-filled week!  Join in a Perilous Adventure to fight the Dragon Smaug to recover your lost gold! Battle Giant Spiders! Outwit Trolls! Be captured by Elves! (Or would you rather stay comfortably at home in your Hobbit-hole?) The ACCC production of "The Hobbit" (the prequel to "The Lord of the Rings")  will be rehearsed and presented July 14-18.  Find out how Bilbo Baggins acquires Gollum's "Precious" Ring!

Kids N Clay Camp
Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity! During this camp, students will learn a variety of ceramic hand building techniques: including pinch, slab, coil, surface decoration, glazing, and more! Each student will complete at least 4 projects.  Because of the drying and firing time needed when working with this unique medium, students will attend camp for 4 days, then return for glazing and surface decoration on the following Friday. (Make-up glaze days can be arranged if necessary).

Celebrate Your Birthday With One of Our Art Parties!
For birthday bashes with an artistic flair, we now offer Visual Art Parties for children.  Our birthday parties are led by professional artists and qualified art instructors. Choose a Pollock party, a puppet party, or one of our other themed projects and let your child’s birthday party be a fun, creative experience.

Cost:  $150 (up to 10 children)
$12 for each additional child

Price includes: Art instructor, Hands-on Creative Arts Workshop with a take-home project, assistance with set-up, serving and clean-up, and use of the Disney Art Studio. Parties are 2 hours. The first hour is for the art-making activity and the second hour is for gifts, cake-cutting, etc.

An Exhibit of Photos from The New York Times Archives
Join Jim Mones, Director of Times Agency, in this captivating look at some of the most extraordinary photographs of our time. These images span over a century and tell the stories of events that changed history.

Budding Dancers Workshop
Join Buddy Holly’s Laurie Eure for this fun musical dance workshop.  Students will start with a traditional jazz warm up and will learn a variety of techniques in the musical theatre style.  Finally students will learn a 1960’s dance combination inspired by the good old-fashioned songs of the 60’s!

Themed Summer Journal Workshop
Choose a theme and create a one-of-a-kind work of art--a summer journal using decorative papers, buttons, images, stamps and a variety of other embellishments. Travel, gardening, sports, hobbies, wedding, new baby or other interests will guide your creativity. All materials are provided, including basic journal, embellishments and instructions. The instructor, Natasha Lawrence, is also a published destination writer on the Internet and for magazines and will share her tips on journal writing.

Acting a Song
Students work one at a time in front of the class to learn the basics of how to act a song.  They will work with finding objectives, actions, intentions, etc.   Part of the class is also used for audition technique.  Bring sheet music from your favorite song from a musical and be prepared to take it to the next step.

Intro to Shakespeare Workshop
This workshop will introduce beginners to performing Shakespeare.  Through a combination of sonnets, soliloquies, and short scenes, students will have the opportunity to explore the language of Shakespeare and gain an appreciation for the style.

Shakespeare Workshop
We will continue to work with Shakespeare's language with a greater focus on polishing soliloquies and scenes to performance level.  Students may come with some material prepared or will be able to work alone or with a partner to develop a scene or monologue in class.

Basics of Animation
Experiment with Animation in this short introductory class through hands on experiences using traditional stop motion techniques including model, drawn and cut out animation. Explore timing, balance, weight, dialogue in basic character creation. The final project for the second class will be done the old fashioned way with a flip book.  Fine tune basic drawing skills and prepare yourself for something cool.

Musical Theatre Auditioning Workshop
Learn audition techniques that will help build your confidence and help you get the role. The instructors will help guide you in finding new songs, selecting the perfect song for a role, and preparing yourself for the audition process. Bring a 1-3 songs that you’d like to work on. Accompanist provided.

ArtStart
These art classes for ages 2-5 are designed to help children develop fine motor skills and encourage creativity through the visual arts. Students will learn color and shape recognition, how to use art tools, and a variety of other concepts while expressing themselves using an array of media and methods.  An adult is to stay with each child.

Recent Community Workshops

Jonathan Green Workshop: Students were introduced to the artist and his work and completed a canvas painting using the style that makes Green’s work so powerful and inspirational
Easy Faux Finishing: Participants learned easy and quick faux finishing techniques that can make a room come to life.
Papier-Mâché Easter Baskets: In Part One the students created their basket using the art of papier-mâché and in Part Two they returned to decorate and embellish their baskets with a variety of decorative accessories, paints and paper.
MOMIX Master Class: The master class included an explanation of the Momix style, a behind the scenes look of a Momix dancer’s life in the company and the positive role the company plays in dance.
Calligraphy: A Hand Lettering Workshop: Beautiful lettering styles from fundamental italics to fancy designs, how to address envelopes, wedding invitations, greeting cards, embellish notes, scrapbook journaling, artistic gift tags and artwork.
Beading Weaving workshops: Learn the art of bead weaving in these fun hands-on workshops.
Holiday Wind Chime Ornaments: Participants decorated miniature wooden wind chimes for holiday decorating in or outdoors.
Snowman Ballet:  Boys and girls learned to retell the story of a snowman that comes to life in this marvelous adventure of a magical friendship.
Advanced Musical Theatre/ Jazz Dance: Nic Thompson taught this advanced jazz class which included combos from past and current Broadway shows.
Calligraphy: A Hand Lettering Workshop:  Participants learned a variety of beautiful lettering styles from fundamental italics to fancy designs, how to address envelopes, wedding invitations, greeting cards, embellish notes, scrapbook journaling, artistic gift tags and artwork.
Stage Make-Up: In this class in basic stage make-up, students learned how to make your features stand out, and techniques for aging and character changes. 
Intro to Musical Theatre Dance: The class discovered what makes theatre dance different from other forms of dance and where the theatre dance style comes from, while learning fun, character motivated choreography.
Adult Portraiture Workshop Color Pastel Portraiture: In this course students learned the basics of creating portraits in color further developing their drawing skills, techniques and traditional approaches to portrait drawing in color.
Pantomime Storytelling: Sesame Street’s R. Bruce Connelly taught this fun filled adventure!
Stage Combat & Choreography: Basic introduction to stage combat technique, choreography and safety.
Photograms: Children learned the art of making a photograph without a camera.  A photogram is made in a dark room with chemicals, photosensitive paper, and a light source, much like traditional photographs.
Spring Into Pottery: During this 4 week course, participants learned basic hand building techniques with emphasis on construction, craftsmanship.
Photomontage and Collage participants learned about two types of assemblage and examined several artists who excel at the art form.
 Youth Drawing and Painting students were introduced to several essential drawing skills including depth, form, and composition.

Pre-registration is required for all classes. 
Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be made 2 weeks prior to the first day of class.  A $25 administration fee will be deducted from any refunded amount.
